Know before you paddle
When is whale watching season in Maui?
Humpback whales migrate to Hawaiian waters during fall and winter. January through March is generally considered a peak period for whale watching; sightings are possible outside those months.
Best time of day for kayaking?
- 7:15 AM: Our preferred departure, matching the Turtle Reef Discovery early start.
- Early morning: Often offers calmer ocean conditions, though wind and swell are unpredictable.
- Every tour: Depends on weather, safety and wild whale behavior.
What can you see?
- Breaches and tail slaps
- Spouts and whale flukes
- Humpbacks swimming or resting at the surface
No encounter, distance, or particular behavior is guaranteed.
Whale protection matters
Hawaiian waters have a 100-yard no-approach rule for humpback whales, including kayaks. We recommend reviewing NOAA's current regulations before heading out.
